Let's Get Depressed!

Let me start off with a story:

When I was 9 I was walking to my grandmothers house with my mom. She doesn't live very far, just one town over: go down a hill, right, right, up a hill, left, STOP, there. On one of the side streets, about 1/4 of the way down the block, I saw a gold bracelet. Just sitting there. It was impossible to miss, it was shining like the Ark in Raiders. I went over, picked it up, and brought it with me. It's been sitting in a drawer ever since.

My neighbors are moving and are selling everything, including jewelry, so they told my mom that if she had anything she wanted to sell to come over. I gave her the bracelet to hock; it was in pretty shitty condition anyway and I was hoping for a nice $10 profit after 16 (holy fuck) years.

While walking around All Points West: Day 2, Johnny Tigs Solo Adventure into the Realm of the Damned I gave my mom a call. She told me she was able to sell the bracelet for 145 bucks.

So I bought a $35 Radiohead shirt.

Yes I am wearing it now.

Now for my review of All Points West: Day 2

I purchased one of the best cups of lemonade I have ever had from the lemonade cart near the Blue Comet stage, in between the VIP entrance and the Stage. Two guys and one woman, not much older than myself, were working behind the cart. The guys were making the drinks and the woman was taking money. The lemonade consisted of Ice, Sugar, Water and fresh squeezed lemons, big surprise right? There was about 90% ice in the cup, a very small amount of sugar, 2 squeezed lemons and just enough water so that when you tried to drink it, you had to tip it, but not so much that the ice would fall all over you. Before I tried it I was annoyed at the $4 price tag, but it really brought the day together and 10% of that $4 goes to helping people from a new jersey asylum find a home.

After spending far too much on a shirt made from recycled plastic bottles I decided I needed another lemonade. This stand was in between the Big merch tent, and the Queen of the Valley stage. I should have known something was going to go wrong since they did not give any of their $4 to help jersey asylumites. There was a younger kid working behind the cart, a woman who was overseeing what he was doing, and a woman working the hotdog cart next to them who seemed to be friends with them all. The recipe was essentially the same, but only one squeezed lemon was used, and it was 90% water instead of ice. I was hoping for this cup of lemonade to rejuvenate me again, to pat me on the back and say, "It's OK, a lot of people bought shirts for that much, and payed 50 bucks extra for a VIP ticket that did absolutely fucking nothing. It'll be OK, I promise." Instead it was like someone spitting in my face...after they just ate a lemon, a single lemon.

Before posting the Radiohead show, which I will do soon, I want to edit it some and issue a warning: it is a terrible recording. The sound ranged from awful to godawful for a while. The speakers sounded like they were fading in and out at times, as if there was only enough power to run one side of the stages speakers and each side was fighting for it constantly. I also started in a bad space, moved around A LOT, there is a lot of talking, I sat down during one song. All of this can be summed up by saying Adam wasn't there, so I was lazy about it all. People smoking, bumming hits, cursing, vomiting, Manny Ramirez sightings and much more when I upload it later. Some of the songs came out well, I'm assuming, but this boot is more about the colorful people around me throughout the show than the show itself. But I have to do some homework first. Before you start ripping me for that, remember the immortal words of Marge Simpson: "Bart, don't make fun of grad students. They've just made a terrible life choice."

1) Posting the show as a whole, including the first few mins that is just Adam and myself making fun of Thom Yorke. Sorry. Those mins could have been used at the end when my damn MP3 player died during the last song (Everything in it's Right Place)
2) I will, after tomorrow's APW and taping, edit both shows and post them again with full track listings and all...but I'm beat.

Santo's Parts Place is a 3 level club owned by Andrew WK. The show was advertised as $10, but when we got there the slew of bouncers and hip girls with clipboards told us it was only 10 if we RSVPed and it was actually $15. What a cheap trick Andrew WK. Fucking asshole should burn in hell. The only bathrooms in the entire place are in the basement and the ladies room lights were dead. A lot of drunk girls had to piss in the dark Monday night. The main floor where bands play is pretty cool. There are speakers lining the walls and Mike said it was like the back of McShanes station wagon. King Khan made the same joke, only about Snoog Dogg's probably nicer car than a station wagon, but…you never know. What with the video DJ? The regular music DJ was very good, Back from the Grave and the like. The first band I thought was called CHUD II but I think they are called Red Dawn II. Allison the drummer is from Awesome Color and maybe the other guy was too, I forget. They get points for being noisy but still not that interesting. Not really the place for them. The next band was the K-Holes. They sounded like a Cramps cover band and the chicks in the band even look like they were at one time part of the Cramps scene. I would have liked them if they went somewhere with their songs, but they all seemed to fall pretty flat. OK enough bitching and let's get to King Khan.

It took forever for them to get out, but they finally did. BBQ sat down, got his right foot ready on the snare and tamborine, left foot ready on the bass drum, hands ready on the guitar and mic close enough for his angel voice. I forget what King Khan was wearing, but it was gone after a few songs anyway. This club was not really the place for King Khan, I think they would have been better setting up on the floor with us. Their set was awesome, but the sound sucked- mostly just the vocals. Not impressed by the zillions of speakers, Andrew. King Khan plays with two tiny amps and you can't mic them through your $234987 PA system? King Khan was manic as usual. It's hard for me to imagine him ever simply hanging out. A quiet night for him is probably gutting a chicken and practicing throwing knives at his wife on one of those spinning boards. Well, whatever the hell that meant- it was an awesome set by one of the best live bands, but it was at the wrong place. Between songs all you heard from downstairs AND UPSTAIRS was mmmCHAmmmCHAmmmCHA. Pretty disgusting for a Crypt Records 25th Anniversary.

McCarren Park is a very cool place to see a show. Free, an empty chipped up pool, slip n slide, dodgeball, and beer. The show wasn’t loud enough, but my ears may have been split open from the night before at Monotonix. I still have a high pitched fuzz that comes when the traffic gets just soft enough on my block. It was hot, so Mike, Evelyn and I did what any sane person should do, run the slip n slide a few times and drink some beers. The Tall Firs were first and they were very boring. Soon enough, the shrines were out there, from what I gather, a collective Euro band with French Germans and whoever else he’s friends with. Each wore all black with big gold necklaces. We waited a few and then King Khan came out in a cape, silver hat and necklaces with shrimp on them. This was the first of his costumes for the show. He wore a blue helmet later and even a KKK hood while he goose-stepped around stage.

The only way to describe the Shrines show is if you saw the stooges fronted by James Brown. Something like that. Here’s what King Khan did- all in a 45 or so minute set:

Banana food fight with audience and band
Ripped out all the insides of a pillow or two
Ripped apart a SPIN magazine a page at a time
Made out with magazine pictures
Told the audience to throw trash at him
Got hit in balls with something hard
Called out the kid who did it and had him come on stage and shoved a banana in his face

All the time singing and dancing and jumping on the crowd. Great show.

Next up was Deerhunter so as the masses crowded the stage we decided to play dodgeball. We got there and the fascists wouldn’t let me play in flip flops so I put myself out there and walked around asking my fellow man for a pair of shoes to play in. No luck. Fucking hipsters and their bright shoes. So I waited for Mike to play and took his way-too-big-for-me shoes and flopped into the pen for dodgeball, all the time deerhunter boring the crowd with whiny love songs (I only imagine- I really have no idea). I couldn’t understand their drone. I got one person out in dodgeball but then was hit with 2 balls at the same time. The bastards were gunning for me! If I had played during the King Khan set there is no doubt I would have taken down the entire other team myself, but nope, I had blah blah blah deerhunter for my inspiration, which was only fitting for my walk to the sidelines after being pegged out.

This is getting long so I will only mention one thing that sums up the entire Black Lips set: chiwawa solo!

Monotonix at the Bodega 8/2/08

Saturday, August 2. To start the 3 day concert series, Evelyn, Mike, Jo and I ventured out to Brooklyn to see the crazy Tel-Avivians Monotonix. The place was called the Bodega, and it looked like just that from the outside. Inside the place was gutted and some nice graffiti covered the walls. The money was how it should be. $5. Free newcastles for an hour. We managed 4 each while we hung out in the basement, reliving our incense drenched days of middle school. (at least I did) Fiasco went on first and made some noise, but I was a little disappointed. They weren’t noisy enough. And I knew what was coming, so they hardly had a chance from the start. I tried, I really tried. A couple 2.50 buds later and Monotonix was all ready.

The hairy little frontman Ami Shalev started the show by screaming down this girl’s throat and picking her up and tossing her on the crowd. It took a single smash of the drums and the ceiling was covered in beer. The scene was what their myspace genre says: Jungle. Only it was more like a jungle getting a shower of napalm while natives ran in circles tearing their clothes off. It is very hard to describe in words. See picture below. I am the one in the blue shirt with my hand on the singer's wrist. The second picture is Mike in a black shirt pushing up the trashcan. The best part of Monotonix is obviously their stage performance. The music is great, (fuck all you Brooklyn vegan commenters) but live is why people go to see them. Of course, the best part is when they play above the crowd. Mike helped pick the singer up in a trashcan while the drummer sat on his bass drum, all the time screaming and banging and ruling the world. The long trainride home to the Bronx was spent wringing out our shirts of beer and trying very hard to think of any show we've ever been to that topped that one.

A Good Month to be Alive (and in the city)

August is here. Finally. My favorite month of the year and surely to be the best month of this year of the RAT, 2008. It's gonna be hot and the days are gonna crack open and piss lightning. I love it. And guess what? There's music that can live up to it. Are you going to all of these shows coming up?? Is anybody out there? Well, probably not, but I will ramble on anyways. Tigs is behind me now with a very big and intimidating rifle pointed at the back of my head. He's screaming at me "GET GOING YOU ASSHOLE!" Well, I am going to get going and get dancing- this August. The whole thing is in motion in my mind, I've just gotta run with it.

Here we go.

Tonight SATURDAY AUGUST 2 is going to be this:

Wow, I ran out of time on my break for this whole August preview thing. Man, I guess just go buy a Rolling Stone for the rest of the Summer Concerts. Nah, they might not have the Radiohead show at Liberty State Park next Friday and Sat August 8 and 9 in there, it's kind of a small show. Well, nothing to download and nothing to take from this. I just wanted to post something to prove I existed, thanks for taking part if you read this. You have made me breathe another day.

Something about Terminal 5 (and a Bob Marley Repost)

Anyone else at Wolf Parade last night?

Since no one reads this blog, I'll take that as a no.

Last night was my first show at Terminal 5. I was pretty psyched because the last time I saw Wolf Parade it was at Warsaw and it fucking rocked. However whenever I mentioned to anyone what show I was going to I received numerous overly pretentious answers resembling something like "You're going THERE for the show? I mean I like Wolf Parade, but the sound is just awful and I have my head so far up my own ass that I can't even hear the music anyway blah blah blah."

So the sound at Terminal 5, where I was standing, was horrendous. It was like listening to the whole concert in a trash can. The stage was like some void where treble couldn't escape. I saw a guitar, and I know it was being played, but it didn't sound like it should have. Everything was muffled.

But what are you gonna do? Wolf Parade played for almost an hour and a half and I was able to look past the muffled sound and enjoy the hell out of myself. The rest of the crowd didn't look like they were having a good time. Maybe it's just indie rock shows in general, but everyone looked and acted like they were trying out to be an extra in the next Romero zombie film. 90% of the audiences biggest move was the sway...you know, when you don't want to move but don't want to act like your some stick in the mud who can't have fun but who feel like they're too old to head bang at all cause it would look stupider than you being in the crowd of this show standing still somehow. You can dance people, free your mind...

Back to the venue. Have you ever been to Graham Central Station in Nashville? Didn't think so. GCS in Nashville is a, at least when I was living there, a 4 floor dance club. Yeah I was there, why so shocked? T5, while only being 3 floors, reminded me of GCS a lot if you were to cut out the middle of all the floors so you could see the bottom floor, the drinks were even more expensive, and it sounded like shit. The people were about the same. Probably friendlier down south.

The stage lights had me kind of tripping out at times. Some of the lights just looked so crazy, like purple laser beams shooting out of the back stage in a perfect triangle. No light escaping from the outline of the shape. It wasn't necessary to mention the lights but hey, something nice right?

I give the place a hard time just because I have a place to bitch about it I guess, but overall the show was really good. They played almost all the songs I wanted to hear and I'll be going back to the venue in a few months anyway for another show. I'll try an different level next time, maybe it'll sound better somewhere else.

I'm gonna assume that after this post and the last you now understand why I never wrote long entries. Adam is a much better writer than me, he needs to step up and blog. THAT'S ME CALLING YOU OUT ADAM!

Notes on Siren and Boris (the spider (not really))

If you live in NY, hipster or not, you should know about Siren. On one day a year a bunch of usually cool, new, "up and coming" bands play for free at Coney Island with 2 of indie rock biggest groups headlining. This year it was Steven Malkmus and Broken Social Scene. Sounds perfect...anyway.

The trip started with a usual 2 hour subway->subway ride turning into a 3 and a half hour subway -> bus -> subway -> subway -> subway ride. But let's talk about the day.

I didn't see everyone because I was late, and it's also just not possible. Not to listen to entire sets anyway especially when most sets are pushing 40 min at max. Anyway...since I can barely remember anything from the sets, I'll just give an overview of what I do remember.

People kept staring at my shirt. A) because i was wearing a black shirt on the hottest day of the year, and B) because it was a Bad Brains shirt.

Anyone remember me?

The Dodo's were fun, I saw about 5 min of them.
Took a picture for some guy of his daughter and him in front of the cyclone.

Then saw Adam and Evelyn.

Times New Viking kicked ass. I remember laughing. I don't know at what.

Here things are hazy

Then we all went and had a Nathan's picnic with Rafe and Lisa. Then we saw our friends Alex, Jenna and Zach. We all went to Islands, who were fuckin insane. A cute girl asked me if I was from DC. I told her I wasn't, just a big Bad Brains fan. She was too and she was from DC. She looked at the ground a lot in the 9 seconds we knew each other.

Then the Cyclone. Now this wasn't my first time riding the Cyclone, but every time on the Cyclone is like the first time on the Cyclone. The woman in the cart ahead of me was screaming bloody murder the whole time. I have never seen anyone this scared before, even in horror movies. Anyway, it may have been the funniest thing I've ever witnessed. The ride ended and she didn't move. I'm pretty sure she went again.

The sound for Malkmus where we were standing sucked and we left after 2 songs of Broken Social Scene, who were pretty great. Three members of Pavement were there all together, only two of them were played but still...just reunite already guys.

The train ride back was significantly shorter.

Here's a show for you that we taped on July 10th of Boris at Webster hall. It's presented in 1 track. Mostly cause I'm lazy. Ok, completely cause I'm lazy. You can hear Adam when he arrives late.
It's not a great recording, that's also part of why I didn't bother to spilt it up. But it was an amazing show. I've seen them three times now and they always bring the place down. This show was probably the weakest of all the shows I saw, but weak for Boris is still 10,000 times more than anyone else. And I didn't have this recording doohickey back then.

Scotland meet Jersey

So The Vaselines Played their FIRST US SHOW EVER last night at Maxwell's in Hoboken.
I think.

Anyway, it was really an amazing show. Adam and I talked about how we never write anything when we post (or post in general but we'll try to remedy that. I swear. I know that's been said before. We're not assholes but...I can't finish that statement truthfully...ok back to the post) and that we really need to push ourselves to write more, even though I'm sure no one will read it. I could give you some long speech about listening to the Vaselines for the first time or what they mean to me but who cares? They wrote amazing, funny, weird, poppy songs. You could be walking down the street just humming one of the tunes to yourself not noticing you're saying "Rory ride me slowly, ride me raw, raw raw." And why shouldn't you walk down the street singing that? It's about a bike, get your mind out of the gutter that I led you to. You'd never know that they had been broken up for the past 15 years, they were comfortable and happy to be up there. And the banter...oh the banter. It was awkward and funny and very awkward. And that really added to the atmosphere. It was a personal show with a bunch of strangers we'll never see again. And it was loud. Now that's fucking impressive.
But you can judge for yourself. Because here it is. We taped it. So did some kid infront of us. His probably sounds better.

Continuing Story...

That, however, is not a Short Wave Rockin Original picture...more info on that later...just to keep you reading.

Adam, Andrew Dunn (you don't know him...neither do we), and myself attended the Daniel Johnston show at the Highline Ballroom last week. It was a pretty good show but I'll let the show speak for itself and you can all make up your own minds.

You can hear me pretty clearly throughout the show, which sucks. I laugh loud and like a moron, so if you're like "who's than annoying kid" it's probably me. I don't think I'm "WOOOOOOOOOOOOO"ing at any point though, so that annoying kid isn't me. It might be...I don't really remember.

You can hear Adam and myself discussing the recording at one point too, me screaming out a few songs and I think you can hear all three (that's including the Dunn that I speaking of) of us laughing during Daniel's Dream pretty clearly. None of that is important, just wanted to make fun of Dunn.

The first half of the show was acoustic, which I was taping, and the second half was with a full band, which Adam taped. You can also watch a bunch of it here (also where I stole the above image from, thanks):

As a special bonus show, I am also going to post Daniel Johnston's show from September 4th of 2007, which my cousin Johnny taped. I really wish I went to that show, I think I like it better. But Daniel is Daniel so I'll take anything I can get. Johnny did a great job of taping and I thank him a thousand times because this show is just amazing.

So I don't know a few of the track names, so I guessed a couple of time or just left it blank, if anyone knows, please comment, as that would be super duper.

Adam here at Short Wave Rockin. This is the first compilation compiled by myself of bands that I found on MySpace that don't suck. I thought long and hard about what to call it and I could only think about Zombies... So officially and amazingly, here is the Short Wave Rockin Zombie Dance Compilation #1.

Here is the plan: I want to start making compilations of tiny independent bands that I like and more importantly: allow their songs to be downloaded on MySpace. What the fuck is up with this? Why would an unsigned band not want their song to be downloaded off their MySpace? Stupid motherfuckers. Maybe they think the song will make them rich one day. I don't know. Anyways, my process was basically going to bands I knew I liked and seeing who they were friends with and the chain went on for a long long time. When I got to a band I, 1) checked to see if they were either unsigned or on a truly independent label (none of those "indie" rock bullshit labels) 2) I clicked on download on their songs to see
If they passed these two steps, I gave em a listen and if I liked what I heard, I put them on this compilation.
It's pretty simple, though it took forever because hardly anyone allows themselves to be downloaded.
If you are in a band and have a MySpace- please let me download your songs- what the fuck!?

This was done with absolutely no permission from any of the bands. I don't know any of the bands and I even had enough restrain to not include my own band (even though we are now dead) I'm looking at the list now and I put the Dwarves on there! Haha, anyways, most of the bands are really small..haha how did that happen?

Also, I'd love it if you would make your own mix with the same goal of listening to new bands that don't suck.

Well... the New York Giants won the Superbowl. It still sounds kinda funny. The reality has yet to sink in. Have you seen the play?... THE PLAY. Man, it must suck to be a Pats fan. 5 Sacks on Brady. Tuck is the man. Oh well, the Giants Dynasty begins.

So Here it is. The post Tigs told you would happen last week or a couple weeks ago happens now. I've been in a Meat Puppets groove lately and so I want to put all the shit I've been collecting out there. Some of this stuff is already online on other sites, torrents, etc.... but I did some work and cut up some 1 wav shows into mp3s and other menial things I am desperately trying to mark as important and difficult. Since I have no idea who put these up originally- the credit goes to the band- for existing.

Actually, the drummer for the Meat Puppets- Derrick Bostrom- had some of these on the Puppets website. So the thanks does actually go to the band. I was really stupid and thought I was finding all these rare things in somewhat hard ways and I eventually tracked 2/3 of the stuff I found to 2 sites:

I'd argue and do argue that he is one of the most inventive guitarists in rock n roll history. More important than his one instrument is the power trio. I'm a sucker for power trios and the meat puppets are one of the best. Fuck you Clapton Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce- this is the Meat Puppets.

What an act to follow. 32456 live DU songs. The funny thing is, I was one of those people that really wanted those bootlegs back up again because I didn't download them all the first time around. What an idiot!! So Short Wave Rockin is back. Earlier this week Tigs said to me, "Hey! We should get Short Wave Rockin going again." I said, "Who?" Then I took some time to mull it over and I remembered. "Oh yea, the music blog that we only post bootlegs on because we are scared shitless of the MAN." But it is true, the MAN is pretty fierce. Lately, I've seen Nodatta among others fall victim to its fucking bloodthirst. Anyways, back to happier things, like aliens and zombies...

So Tigs promised you that I, Adam, would follow up with the greatest post ever, but I'm, sorry to say this is not it. It will come some day in February when you've forgotton about SWR all over again. King Khan and BBQ Show Live

I went to see King Khan and the BBQ Show at Montana's Party Place in Brooklyn last Friday. If you don't know who they are, check them out. Their albums are great, but seeing them live is a completely different animal. I've been unable to get the show out of my head, for a number of reasons that I will get to. Overall, the show was fucking crazy. I'm not sure if I have ever been to a crazier show before. It was not what I expected at all from a two man band from Canada.

First off, the venue, Montana's Party Place is a small transformed restaurant that looks like it should be hosting a middle school dance. The bands play on the ground by the entrance behind two large PA stacks.

After the two opening bands, the Vivian Girls and Golden Triangle (both of which rocked) King Khan and BBQ started setting up. They each had a tiny VOX amp sitting on a chair. BBQ, was setting up his unique drum/guitar/vocal set up. He plays a bass drum, tambourine and snare drum with his feet while he plays rhythm guitar and sings lead on most songs. King Khan is up front singing and shredding on guitar.

Before I get into what happened- let me quickly explain what the hell they play. They play rock music that is mixed with some soul/punk/rockabilly/r&b/and other styles I'm sure I can't comprehend. For the most part, I would call them a garage rock band, but not one of those horrid throwback garage rock bands that leave a disgusting aftertaste in your mouth (i.e. strokes hives vines blah blah blah).

So they are setting up. Geez, I've written a damn novel already and they haven't even played a song yet. King Khan is checking the levels. Then he takes his shirt off. He puts on a black sparkly shirt. Checks some more levels. Takes his pants off. He pulls down the black sparkly thing that is actually a dress. He plays guitar and sings along with the house music. Then he puts on his purple wig. He's ready to go.

Behind him, BBQ is almost all set up, but he needs one more thing, his turban. Now they are ready. They start by playing a chuck berry riff instrumental to warm up. The sound quality is horrible, but it doesn't really matter, they are tearing it apart. BBQ solos into the crowd on all sides as it crowds around him. The crowd is so crazy, one of the PA towers almost falls. There is some jerk trying to start a moshpit and he's running into everyone, but it doesn't really matter, because the music is kick ass.

Then- the music stops and things need to be fixed. I think the crowd broke something. In the silence, the asshole who was running into everyone starts screaming at the band. He's only three or four people back. He says they are boring and the opening bands were better and they need to get a bass. Without hesitation, King Khan charges, guitar first, into the crowd and smashes the butt of his guitar into the kids face. The kid hits the ground, the guitar hits the ground, he runs outside and King Khan chases him.

So we wait for him to come back and he finally does. I hope he beat the shit out of the kid. Anyways, the rest of the show was great. Three or four times during the show, King Khan changed his lyrics to be about the asshole. He sang about smashing the kid's face in with his guitar. He was obviously pissed about it, but the show went on.

Well, I'm a king bee.
I decided to trace the evolution of the song "I'm A King Bee" originally written by Slim Harpo. Many bands have done it, each with their own little spin on the song. The Minutemen

I've got three Minutemen boots here. Listening to the 3-9-83 show (the best quality of the three) I am again realizing how fucking amazing D. Boon is. I was looking up some things online about him, and he's # 89 on Rolling Stone's list of best guitarists of all time. The list is complete bullshit, but I was psyched to see they gave him some credit. As far as originality, I'd have him in the top 5. He had one of the most distinctive guitar sounds in the history of rock music.
The other two shows are very low quality, but nice to have... just because.

There's a documentary out called We Jam Econo. I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard good things. Also- the past few weeks I've had some fun looking at the stuff on Mike Watt's home page called
Mike Watt's Hoot Page. He does an online radio show called The Watt from Pedro Show.
Its interesting to see what he's listening to, especially newer bands. He likes Boris and Jay Reatard, which is pretty cool.

I've got 4 songs (3 of which you can get at the bands myspace) and they are the only 4 songs I have ever heard of this band. I'd like it if they came to new york because that would be wonderful.

To describe to you the music would be completely ridiculous. Yet I will. No offense to 2 man bands out there, or 1 man 1 woman bands, most of these bands try too hard to make a lot of noise, and can only accomplish it in the studio with 6 or 8 fucking tracks of music. Can you play bass, three guitars, an accordion and bagpipes at the same time on stage Jack White? No?- Go fuck yourself. Ape City R&B is at the core of what rock n' roll is and should be about- fast, loud, hard and without any of the bullshit most rock bands are all about today.

Kyuss Bootlegs

I've got 3 Kyuss boots from 1995. The Austin, TX one has the best sound and best set of the three. I love hearing the Welcome to Sky Valley stuff live. Yep. Well, let me see what else I can add to this. Hmm.

Some filler: Kyuss is a band from the desert. They play fuzzy rock music. Most people know the members of the band from their various bands after kyuss: Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, anything Brant Bjork, Hermano and so on and so on. They are the best of the 90s bands labeled "stoner rock." Oh, and listen to these bootlegs in one sitting with no interruptions.

Well, Kurt Vonnegut is dead. I can think of nothing better to do in response than listen to Black Flag. It seems to be the band I turn to when I'm pissed off. So, here are 3 Black Flag bootlegs that are all fucking good. My favorite it the 81 show, but the other two are good as well. The 82 show is the rollins era black flag in full swing with his songs instead of him just singing the already awesome black flag songs. More like out of this world! Sorry, that was terrible. Anyway, I thought "what the hell, let me post something awesome and different instead of another Nirvana bootleg." This is a live Sun Ra recording from March of 68 at the Electric Circus in NY. The sound quality leaves something to be desired, which isn't a suprise, but it's still a really good show. The whole show is pretty amazing, actually. If you have the chance, check it out.

Into the Black (obviously). Adam's been carrying the site for a while, so I decided to stop being lazy and do something. Here it is, every Nirvana fan's dream. This is the bootleg box set to have, six discs of Nirvana. The first two discs are demos and sessions, which have an amazing assortment of songs and great sound quality. Disc three is from the Paramount Theater in Seattle on Halloween of 91. This was the last show before they took off for Europe on the Nevermind tour. Great sound quality, and as always, high energy. One of their best shows (that I've heard). Disc 4 Reading 92. Yeah, you know the show that when people reminisce about Nirvana and the great shows they put on it pops into their heads first. Here it is. It's not complete, but as far as I know there are no complete versions floating around. It's from the "1st FM Broadcast" and if I can dig up my copy from the "2nd FM Broadcast" (which has two extra tracks, but that's still not the complete show) I'll post it. Also it has songs from the SNL that Nirvana did. Awesome. Discs 5 & 6: The Last American Show, Seattle 01-08-94. Just an amazing show. There are also some Peel Session tracks contained on the discs, but they should be messed up because that's how they were transferred onto CD (damn bootleggers). I'll post a better version of the Peel Sessions soon. This is a good bootleg because it mixes Gish and Siamese Dream, you can listen to people talk about the songs as they are being played, Billy Corgan doesn't seem like a complete asshole, there is a cover Blue Oyster Cult, and even, a short joke version of Bad Moon Rising. Lightning Bolt Rock Your Face

I'm pretty sure that the title of this post says it all. Lightning Bolt, for those of you who don't know them, are a two piece group from RI, they never play on stage only on the floor, and they're louder, faster, harder and more amazing than anything you've heard before. Lightning Bolt are Brian Gibson on bass and Brian Chippendale on drums. How to describe them? You know those old Maxell commercials (I think they were commercials and not just a picture. However, if it was just a picture imagine it as a commercial) of the guy sitting in his chair, he turns on the stereo and the music starts to blow everything away? That's what it feels like to listen to Lightning Bolt with the volume all the way down. Imagine what it's like loud. Here are two amazing live shows, one with Sonic Youth (how cool). I found these on the net maybe 2 or 3 months ago, and once again I have no idea where from. But here they are, in all their glory, in one file because they're pretty small:

This band is from Brooklyn and they are probably the best wannabe Stooges band I've ever listened to. And that was not meant to be insulting, that's a compliment. They've even got the horns down on the last track "Animal."
Last week I got the new Stooges album and, after being depressed for most of the weekend, I found some comfort in this album. Hope you like it.

This is a bootleg of Sleater Kinney in 2005 touring The Woods. Although I was able to see them a couple of times before 2005, I missed them on their tour after the last album. This was a big mistake, because The Woods might be my favorite SK album. This show has a kick ass version of "Let's Call It Love" which morphs into "Entertain." Ok, well I'm tired and want to watch Pick of Destiny for the third time because I love it (shut up I'm allowed to have my own opinions about stuff, that's why I have a blog) , so lets make this quick. This is one of my favorite Black Flag albums, live or studio. Most of the stuff is off of Loose Nut, though there is a 15 minute track with "Slip it in" and "Gimme Gimme Gimme"- the middle of it telling us all- who has the 10 1/2.
Just like Tigs, I have a problem writing about things, and yet this is a blog. Well, how about that cover, eh? Nice. Yep. This album is probably best listened to loud, loud, loud and not on headphones, ever.

Unicorns Live @ Echo Lounge, Atlanta 3/2/04

Ok so here's what I'm gonna do. Today I will post this Unicorns show. Tomorrow I will post an Islands show. Why did I need to tell you that? Because I don't have much to say but have a blog and want to use it so I have to fill up space somehow. Anyway, if you never heard the Unicorns before you're missing out. The Unicorns were an indie rock band (but really so much more) from Canada that had a sound all their own with songs that are so catchy you'll be singing them out loud before they even finish. I don't know where I found this show (like most of the stuff I have) but it's flat out amazing. The band has alot of energy and are and having a lot of fun. The sound quality pretty good so I don't care if you know the Unicorns or not, pick this up. Oh yeah and they break out into P.I.M.P. during The Clap and it's great.

Here are two bootlegs from the Screaming Trees. Both were found at Time for Light.

The first is an early radio show from 87. The cover of "No Fun" is particularly excellent. The recording is pretty good. One song that I think is better than the studio version is "Orange Airplane."

This is a little bit later, the sound quality is sometimes great, sometimes horrible. Some of this playlist is wrong, but its hard to tell with the huge chunks of unsplit tracks. My favorite Trees song is on here- "Ivy" and the live version kicks the shit out of you. I know nothing about drumming, but man, after listening to this bootleg, Barrett Martin sounds like one of the best. The download is worth it for only "Subtle Poison" Enjoy.

Broken Social Scene @ Ottawa Bluesfest 05

Here is a killer show by everyone's favorite supergroup Broken Social Scene at (as the title of this article indicates) the Ottawa Bluesfest all the way back in 2005. Here is a nice Sonic Youth live show from the Riviera Theater in Chicago on October 5th, 1992. This show is from the Dirty-era of SY, and the set list definalty reflects this. Theresa's Sound-world has always been one of my favorite SY tracks, so that (along with the name of this bootleg) is the main reason I picked this CD up. The sound quality leaves something to be desired, but it's not terrible and it's definatly listenable, it's just difficult to hear who ever is singing. But with awesome performances of Silver Rocket and Teenage Riot how could you not want it?

Primus at Roseland in New York 11/14/2003

This is a Primus show I went to a few years back on November 11, 2003. The band played Sailing the Seas of Cheese in its entirety as well as mix of other songs. The pink floyd cover of "In the Flesh" during "Is it luck?" is pretty cool. The newer song "Mary of the Ice Cube" is great, but the best song is the long long version of "Harold of the Rocks."

First Live Show

Well I figured I should post something since Adam had done everything so far. This is Tigs, if you didn't already know and I've decided to post Nirvana's First Live show as my first post and the first music post so far. This is the legendary concert from March 7th(supposidly) 1987 at a house part in Seattle. To quote the review from DigitalNirvana.net, "This is the kind of disc that makes people collect bootlegs." The sound quality isn't the best, but what do you expect from a house party form 1987 in Seattle? It's a solid show, but more worth it for the history of it. Any Nirvana fan needs this show. For everyone else, it's a raw intense show that, if you can get past the sound quality, you'll definatly enjoy it.
